A Reuters Journalist lost their Life and 6 More Reported Injured in Southern Lebanon by Israeli Rocket Fire
Date: October 14, 2023
A Reuters video journalist lost their life and six other journalists were injured in a tragic incident that occurred in southern Lebanon on Friday. According to another Reuters filmmaker who was on the site, the deadly incident happened when rockets fired from the Israeli side struck them.
A group of reporters from media organisations like Al Jazeera and Agence France-Presse were on assignment at Alma al-Shaab, which is near the Israeli border. The Israeli military and the Lebanese group Hezbollah have been fighting each other along the border in this region for some time.
Hezbollah member and Lebanon’s prime minister, Najib Mikati, both blamed Israel for what happened.
The inquiry was not immediately answered by the Israel Defence Forces. “We would never intend to harm or take the life of any journalist engaged in their professional duties,” stated Gilad Erdan, Israel’s UN representative, in a recent briefing. But it’s important to understand that we live in a conflicted world and that unpredictable things do happen.” He underlined that the country is dedicated to conducting a comprehensive probe into the tragedy.

Reuters Confirmed the Death in an Official Message
Issam Abdallah bravely provided a live video feed to broadcasting networks, and Reuters confirmed his tragic death in an official message. He had the tranquil scenery of a nearby hillside in focus with his camera at the moment when an enormous explosion rocked the neighbourhood. A cloud of smoke rose from the explosion, and agonised screams could be heard everywhere.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed,” reported Reuters.
After receiving the proper medical attention, two other Reuters reporters, Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, who had been injured during the incident, were released from a hospital, according to Reuters.

Reuters and 2 Other News Organisations were Filming Missile Launches
According to Nazeh, Reuters and two other news organisations were filming missile launches that were coming from the Israeli side. Unfortunately, Abdallah was sitting on a low stone wall when one of the missiles hit him, and the others were not far behind. A second missile struck the group’s car shortly after, and it burst into flames.
Although the Associated Press and Al Jazeera identified Israel as the source of the shells, Reuters was unable to determine the rockets’ origin or whether Israel had launched them.
Two of the news agency’s reporters were hurt, according to Agence France-Presse.
