Australia Won Their 6th Men’s 50-Over World Cup Title
Date : 19th November, 2023
THE SOIL – Travis Head’s outstanding century in the final ended India’s celebrations as Australia won their sixth men’s 50-over World Cup title in Ahmedabad.
Australia were stunned early on when David Warner was caught by Virat Kohli off Mohammed Shami’s bowling for just seven runs. Australia were given a modest goal of 241 to win following a merciless bowling display.
When Mitchell Marsh (15) and Steve Smith (44) were removed by Jaspreet Bumrah in quick succession, a full, partisan crowd celebrated.
But it was as good as it got for the hosts, as Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out) combined for a composed 137 off 120, gradually eating away at the confidence of both their rivals and the onlookers.
Glenn Maxwell Struck the Final 2 Runs
Glenn Maxwell struck the final two runs required for Australia to win after Head was exposed.
India had advanced to the final by winning all ten of their games.
India was put in to bat by Pat Cummins, and Rohit Sharma started their innings strongly until being brilliantly caught by Head for a 47 from 31 balls.
After losing Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer for four runs apiece, the hosts were truly in danger when Cummins struck and Virat Kohli inside-edged onto his stumps for 54, leaving India 148-4.
Following Josh Hazlewood’s dismissal of the dangerous Ravindra Jadeja for just nine, and Starc’s removal of Lokesh Rahul to end his tenacious 66-run innings, India were 203-6.
