British Prime Minister David Cameron Sticks To Maintai Military Support for Kyiv However Long It Takes
Date : 16th November, 2023
THE SOIL – In an attempt to provide comfort amid worries that Ukraine is being forgotten as much of the world’s attention is focused on the conflict in Gaza, former British prime minister David Cameron, in his new position as foreign secretary, promised in an unexpected visit to Ukraine, announced on Thursday, that his country will maintain military support for Kyiv “however long it takes.”
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning prior to the visit, stating that his nation could not afford to be in a “frozen conflict” with Russia. Since taking office as foreign minister on Monday, this is Mr. Cameron’s first overseas assignment for business.
In a video posted on social media by the Ukrainian leader, he stated, “The world is not focused on the situation on our battlefield in Ukraine, and this dividing focus really doesn’t help,” during a meeting with Mr. Cameron.
Britain Would Cooperate With Its Friends
In response, the foreign minister of Britain said that his nation would cooperate with its friends “to make sure the attention is here in Ukraine.”
Kiev is increasingly worried that if the summer counteroffensive fails to retake significant territory from well-established Russian forces, certain partners may be dissuaded from continuing to provide military support, leaving Kyiv with a protracted struggle in which Moscow is winning.
The world’s waning attention to Ukraine’s past attempts to repel Russian military incursions is the source of Mr. Zelensky’s concerns. After Russian proxy forces entered eastern Ukraine in 2014, the battle turned into a low-intensity, protracted conflict.
During that time, while Mr. Cameron was prime minister, Britain supported Ukraine by offering training to Ukrainian soldiers from the British Army. However, despite taking hundreds of lives and uprooting tens of thousands of people, the conflict finally lost international interest.
'Ukraine Would Become Entangled in a Protracted Conflict' - Predicts Gen. Valery Zaluzhny
Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, stated earlier this month that the battle along the hundreds of miles of front line had come to a standstill and that both sides were neutralising the other’s ground and aerial weapons. He predicted that Ukraine would become entangled in a protracted conflict in which Russia would hold the upper hand unless it could emerge with more sophisticated weaponry and technology.
It seems that Mr. Zaluzhny’s remarks were meant to persuade his country’s Western allies to arm Ukraine with weaponry that may overcome the impasse, such as cutting-edge drones, mine-breaching equipment, and decoy systems to get beyond Russian air defences.
