Date: September 12, 2023
THE SOIL – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the phone on Wednesday, their first exchange of direct communication since China mediated a diplomatic reconciliation. The leaders discussed the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian issue during their conversation.
The conversation between the two leaders transpired while Israel launched aerial assaults in the Gaza Strip in response to a lethal assault by Palestinian Hamas militants within Israel.
Saudi Arabia stressed on Making Effort to Communicate to Resolve Tensions
Saudi Crown Prince and Raisi had a discussion about the “imperative to halt acts of violence against Palestine,” according to Iranian state media.
According to the Saudi state news agency SPA, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia stressed in his remarks that the Kingdom is making every effort to communicate with both international and regional entities in order to resolve the present upsurge in tensions.
According to SPA, he also underlined Saudi Arabia’s unwavering position against any kind of violence done to non-combatants.
China mediated a diplomatic arrangement that led to Saudi Arabia and Iran deciding to restore their relationship in March. After a turbulent seven years during which strained relations had threatened the peace and security of the Gulf, there has been a reconciliation. Furthermore, it had led to the escalation of wars from Syria to Yemen throughout the Middle East.
Discourage Iran from Getting Involved in the Fight
Regarding Raisi’s meeting with the crown prince, a senior State Department official stated that the United States, which is a major ally of Israel in the fight against Hamas, keeps in constant contact with Saudi Arabian authorities.
The spokeswoman stressed that the US was pushing its allies who have ties or connections to Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon or Hamas, to urge Hamas to stop its offensive actions, secure the release of prisoners, stop Hezbollah from getting involved, and discourage Iran from getting involved in the fight.
