THE SOIL – In a major speech, Pope Francis took the strongest position he has taken on the Gaza war to date, calling for the release of every person detained by Hamas militants. Also, he emphasised that Israel has a right to self-defense.
During his monthly gathering in St. Peter’s Square, he also expressed his deep concern over the siege imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip.
“I am still painstakingly and anxiously following events in Israel and Palestine.” Numerous fatalities and injuries have occurred. He prayed for the families of those who had to endure a day of sadness instead of a feast day and asked for the hostages to be freed right away.
Hamas Broke into Southern Israel, Launching The Most Catastrophic Attack
“It is the right of those who are attacked to defend themselves, but I am very worried by the total siege in which Palestinians live in Gaza, where there have also been many innocent victims,” he stated.
This past weekend, armed Hamas terrorists from the Gaza Strip broke into southern Israel, launching the most catastrophic attack by Palestinian militants inside Israel’s borders.
Israeli military officials announced on Wednesday that the number of casualties in Israel had increased to 1,200, with over 2,700 people suffering injuries.
On Monday, at a conference in Rome, Israel’s envoy to the Vatican, Raphael Schutz, told that he understands the Vatican’s aspiration for peace, which is a sentiment that is universally held. He still wants to hear more unwavering declarations of Israel’s inalienable right to self-defense.
