THE SOIL – Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, voiced his fear on Friday that an Israeli land invasion of Gaza may result in a disproportionately high number of civilian casualties, which he considered completely unacceptable.
After an attack over the weekend by the militant Hamas group, Israeli military authorities have ordered over a million inhabitants in Gaza City to immediately evacuate to the southern area during the next twenty-four hours. At the same time, they have been preparing for a potential ground attack by mobilising tanks. In his most recent speech, Russian President Putin discussed this circumstance.
Putin, whose military has caused extensive damage in Ukraine and resulted in the tragic loss of civilian lives during almost 20 months of conflict, emphasised the potential dire repercussions for all parties involved when employing heavy weaponry in residential areas.
“It’s impossible to overstate how painful it is to see innocent people suffer. “Putting an end to the violence has to be our top priority,” he said at a conference in Kyrgyzstan attended by former Soviet Union member states.
Putin Calls for Concerted Effort to bring about an Immediate Halt to Hostilities
Putin stated that Israel had the right and duty to defend its interests against an unrelenting and exceptionally brutal attack.
He called for a concerted effort to bring about an immediate halt to hostilities and create stability in the existing circumstances on the pitch.
“Russia is ready to coordinate with all constructively minded partners,” Putin stated.
Reiterating his past criticism of the US, Putin claimed that US policies in the Middle East were inadequate, which led to the current crisis.
Undoubtedly, Russia has historically maintained ties with Israel as well as Palestinian groups like Hamas. But ever since the situation in Ukraine began, there have been problems with its relationship with Israel.
Moscow to Plea Israel to Allow Delivery of Food and Medicine to Gaza Strip
Moscow made a sincere plea to Israel on Thursday, asking for a cessation of hostilities to allow for the delivery of food and medication to the Gaza Strip, which is under siege. They deemed the intolerable implications of the indiscriminate shelling of this tightly surrounded coastal region and expressed grave worry over the alarming toll it was taking on innocent residents.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Deputy Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and the Lebanese Ambassador met on Friday in Moscow and discussed the current problem.
Their conversation emphasised the critical need to stop armed conflicts from spreading to Lebanon and its neighbours, the impending humanitarian crisis, and the possibility of a major Palestinian refugee inflow.
