Tom Emmer – Third Ranking Member, as Contender
Date : 25th October, 2023
THE SOIL – Following five vote rounds that suggested a difficult path ahead, House Republicans on Tuesday named Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, their third-ranking member, as their contender for Speaker.
The Republicans’ choosing to forego their second pick for speaker, Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, led to the internal party election. He did not receive the required majority of votes to be elected to the presidency.

Mr. Emmer Has Positioned Himself as a Candidate Who Strives to Bring People Together
Since January, Mr. Emmer, 62, has served as the party whip. In this capacity, he bears the crucial responsibility of calculating and guaranteeing the backing required to propel the speaker’s programme. A former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted from office, endorsed him and he held the highest ranking position among the Republican candidates.
Mr. Emmer, a well-known conservative, has positioned himself as a candidate who strives to bring people together. He supported a temporary budget package last month to avoid a government shutdown and voted in favour of recognising President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. A number of ardent conservatives, some of whom advocated for Mr. McCarthy’s ouster from leadership, have expressed support for the Republican representative from Minnesota.

Republican Delegates Disclosed Non Support for Mr. Emmer
Still, he might have challenges in getting a majority of the House’s votes because only a few opposing members might make his election vulnerable. After a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, Republican delegates disclosed that an internal vote suggested that as many as 25 lawmakers had stated they would not support Mr. Emmer.
Mr. Emmer, a former ice hockey player and coach at college, held the distinguished position of chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee for two terms.
